Sal Butter is fully refined after being extracted from the seeds of the Shorea Robusta tree, native to the Indian Subcontinent of Asia. This unique butter carries an off-white appearance with a bland to minimal aroma, primarily used in the manufacturing of topical skin products throughout the personal-care and cosmetic industry for its natural emollient properties. Sal butter has been used for centuries, primarily in India, to protect and heal the epidermis from harsh environmental factors. It has a particular high content of Stearic and Oleic Acid content, increasing its popularity in lotions, soapmaking, and creams. Sal butter’s impressive fatty acid composition allows Sal Butter to yield oxidative stability to product formulations.

Virgin is considered the natural/raw material with the characteristic color, flavor, and aroma. Refining removes these properties so the material is a lighter shade than the virgin material and often times clear, off-white, or white with little-to-no scent or flavor.
Deodorized materials go through a non-chemical, high-vacuum process to reduce their natural aroma. While the aroma is not removed fully, a deodorized product’s aroma is less potent than the natural or unrefined variety.
