Virgin Flax Seed oil, otherwise known as unrefined flax oil, is cold-pressed extracted from the Linum usitatissimum flax species. As a virgin raw material, this oil yields a characteristic golden yellow appearance and with a distinguishing aroma and flavor profile. As a natural ingredient sought after for its naturally occurring high level of alpha-linolenic acid content, flax seed oil is often a preferred cooking oil or used in food formulations for potential nutritional benefits. Given its low smoke point, flax seed oil is preferred in various culinary preparations that do not require heat such as in dressings, marinades, and vinaigrettes. Nutraceutical formulators opt to encapsulate flax seed oil as a nutritional supplement, distributed in health and vitamin stores. Virgin is considered the natural/raw material with the characteristic color, flavor, and aroma. Refining removes these properties so the material is a lighter shade than the virgin material and often times clear, off-white, or white with little-to-no scent or flavor.
Refined, bleached (non-chemical process), deodorized. An "RBDW" product goes through a winterization ("W") process in addition to the RBD process.
Deodorized materials go through a non-chemical, high-vacuum process to reduce their natural aroma. While the aroma is not removed fully, a deodorized product’s aroma is less potent than the natural or unrefined variety.
