Sesame seed oil is a widely procured carrier oil expeller pressed from the Sesamum indicum plant followed by a non-chemical refining process. The refining of this popular oil results in a clear honey appearance with a bland aroma and flavor profile. Known to be a relatively stable oil, refined sesame seed oil is advantageous in personal-care and cosmetic formulations targeting hair and skincare, culinary applications, and industrial uses from insect repellents to coatings. Sesame seed oil is rich in omega-6 fatty acid content, comprised mostly of unsaturated fatty acids, and exhibits effective moisturizing, hydrating, and nourishing properties beneficial in a range of topical products such as creams, hair serums, and face masks. Virgin is considered the natural/raw material with the characteristic color, flavor, and aroma. Refining removes these properties so the material is a lighter shade than the virgin material and often times clear, off-white, or white with little-to-no scent or flavor.
Refined, bleached (non-chemical process), deodorized. An "RBDW" product goes through a winterization ("W") process in addition to the RBD process.
Deodorized materials go through a non-chemical, high-vacuum process to reduce their natural aroma. While the aroma is not removed fully, a deodorized product’s aroma is less potent than the natural or unrefined variety.
