Perilla seed oil is cold-pressed extracted from the Perilla frutescens, yielding an oil rich in essential fatty acids, primarily omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid C18:3n-3, ALA for short. The ALA content of perilla seed oil typically ranges from 50-60% concentration, an exceptionally high content compared to comparable vegetable carrier oils. After cold-pressed extraction, the yielded oil is fully refined and exhibits a clear light-yellow appearance with a bland aroma and flavor profile. Due to its naturally high content of alpha-linolenic acid, perilla seed oil is sought after in a range of industries and applications. It is utilized in topical personal-care and cosmetic formulations in facial creams, serums, and products targeting problematic skin types. Perilla seed oil finds other uses in lubricants and in the manufacturing of inks and paint in addition to the production of animal and bird feed.

Virgin is considered the natural/raw material with the characteristic color, flavor, and aroma. Refining removes these properties so the material is a lighter shade than the virgin material and often times clear, off-white, or white with little-to-no scent or flavor.
Refined, bleached (non-chemical process), deodorized. An "RBDW" product goes through a winterization ("W") process in addition to the RBD process.
Deodorized materials go through a non-chemical, high-vacuum process to reduce their natural aroma. While the aroma is not removed fully, a deodorized product’s aroma is less potent than the natural or unrefined variety.
