Castor oil – Sulphonated 70% is produced by treating refined castor oil with sulphuric acid, yielding an amber to red hue with a distinct characteristic aroma. The sulphonation process results in this viscous oil being fully water dispersible and promotes its miscibility with water, creating homogenous solutions. Also known as Turkey Red oil, it is visually comparable to the dye color of the same name. The 70% notation in the product name refers to the Total Fatty Matter percent which typically ranges from 30-80% with 70% being in highest demand. Sulphonated castor oil is procured throughout the cosmetic and personal-care industry for a variety of products such as bath bombs, soap, and haircare solutions due to its advantageous humectant properties. Other industrial applications include paints, cleaning products, textiles, polishes, and dyes.

Virgin is considered the natural/raw material with the characteristic color, flavor, and aroma. Refining removes these properties so the material is a lighter shade than the virgin material and often times clear, off-white, or white with little-to-no scent or flavor.
Refined, bleached (non-chemical process), deodorized. An "RBDW" product goes through a winterization ("W") process in addition to the RBD process.
Deodorized materials go through a non-chemical, high-vacuum process to reduce their natural aroma. While the aroma is not removed fully, a deodorized product’s aroma is less potent than the natural or unrefined variety.
