Frankincense oil – Serrata is steam-distilled from the gum of Boswellia serrata, a hardy tree that is indigenous to the Middle East. The resin extracted from the trunk begins as milky-white sap which hardens into a gum resin and scraped off for steam-distillation. This variety of frankincense oil yields a harsher, more punitive aroma than the popular Carterii species, with the serrata version described as having a strong ,spicy balsamic note. Frankincense oil is procured for aromatherapy and incense use, in the nutraceutical industry to produce topical rubs and ointments for muscle aches, and for topical cosmetic formulations targeting the skin such as topical serums.
