Xylitol is widely used throughout the food and beverage industry as a low-calorie sweetener. It is a preferred sugar substitute due to it its nonexistent to extremely mild after-taste with only 2.4 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram in table sugar. In addition to food and beverage formulations, this ingredient is formulated into everyday consumer hygiene products such as nasal spray, mouthwash, toothpaste, and oral rinses.
